View Full Version : Anybody watch F1 at all?

I've more or less given up on F1 in the past couple of years as it's been more or less chronically boring. I did catch the race on the weekend though and it wasn't too bad, although mainly because nobody seemed capable of staying on the track.

I couldn't believe that even before the race had started Montoya managed to spin on the warmup lap and them Fisichella stalled on the grid. If F1 drivers are the best of the best then I dread to think what the less talented guys are like.

And Button's engine blowing up on the last corner of the race? Comedy genius. (I'm not what you'd call a big JB fan) ;)

I watch it, but not as much as I used to. Chronically boring is a good way to put it. Very little overtaking. At least the red cars are not winning everything these days.

I don't know why the top bods in F1 have such difficulty making the sport interesting. Here's how I'd fix it in 5 simple steps:

Slick tyres for everyone, as many as you like
No pointless fuel regulations. Qualify with whatever you like in the tank and fill up before the race with whatever you like.
Electronic aids almost completely banned
Hugely decrease the amount of downforce allowed
Allow a much smaller amount ot testing and have the same qualifying setup as MotoGP. The cars would run for the full hour if they needed the track time.
Ban rule changes! :D

word up on #7, MP

I'm still a huge F1 fan, probably always will be (unless, horror of horrors, Kimi actually goes to the Red Cars).

Seems like Bernie and crew are doing all they can to hose F1. And yet, the teams still manage to put on the show (last year's USGP, an exception).

This season, bizarre qualifying aside, looks like it could be a barn burner.

Renault is still the team to beat, damn it.

Ferrari has their moments, but I still think they are fading, especially compared to...

McLaren...if Kimi can keep his car running, and JP manages to avoid tanking his run, they could really give Renault a run for the titles, Drivers & Constructors.

Williams is "definitely sucking" (to quote the blonde gal in the VW commercials), and what's up with Toyota, arguably the team with the deepest pockets in Formula One?

Nico could be a suprise this season...I think he's shown that between himself and Speed, he's brought more talent to the Big Leagues of the two of them.

JV is still a tool, and should retire ;)

Yeah, Nico is good. He gives me a reason to watch.

Go Nico!

I'm curious how Jenson Button is seen by the 'experts' in the US. Over here, perhaps unsurprisingly since he's 'our man', he's hailed as this absolute genius of a driver with more talent than you can shake a stick at.

Personally I don't see it. Not only do I find him hugely arrogant and annoying, but he's had a competitive car for a couple of years and not won a single race. Everyone says 'oh he'll win one soon', but the one word that sums him up for me is 'overhyped'. Is he similarly 'hyped' in the US, or do they just overlook him as the distinctly average driver I see him as?

Button has his moments, but he just isn't as consistant as the top echelon drivers. He's still capable of running fast, and given the right situation is certainly capable of being on the podium, but he seems to be more error prone (as well as having his share of bad luck) than the top guys.

IMHO ;)

Cor, that's impressively politically correct! Have you considered a job as an F1 commentator? ;)

IMHO:

Button has a good car, but he only seems to drive it quickly once in a blue moon. With his excellent car, and if everyone else crashes, he's certainly capable of being on the podium, but he seems to be more inept and generally useless than the top guys.

Well, Button sure had a moment today. Not his fault though. That was one ugly pitstop, hope everyone is alright...

Yeah I saw that bit (thought I'd grab some lunch and there wasn't any proper racing on ). Looked to me like it was mainly the lollipop bloke's fault, but JB could've done a better job of getting on the brakes afterwards.

In the end I got too bored and flicked over to the end of the Le Mans 24 hour bike race instead. Much better. :D
