View Full Version : Do you ride?
Just curious if anyone else rides a bike here. I'm currently riding a black (the best colour, obviously ;)) SV650s. Not the best bike in the world but quite good fun and sounds lovely with it's Micron full system. :D
What do you guys ride?
Oblivion Knight 30-12-2005, 12:05 PM The only bike I have is a bicycle, and it's been sat in the shed for quite a while.. ;)
Nope, dont ride other than a bicycle.
Dad rides an 883 Sportster (Harley) and has a CB500 for work and fun (he is a bike instructor). I would look like a monkey on a mangle on a 125, so I think I will wait until I am 21 and get a 500 or bigger :)

There's plenty of fun to be had on a pushbike, you just have to get past the initial 'about to pass out after riding 30 yards' stage. :shifty:
Anth, you're probably plenty aware of this already if your dad's an instructor, but you can always do your test and ride what you like when under 21 so long as it's a sub 33bhp bike or is restricted to 33bhp (very easily done, many garages offer it). I and plenty of my mates have/had 'big bikes' while under 21, from 400cc dirt bikes right through to 1000cc sportsbikes. 2 years after you do your test the 33bhp expires and you can legally ride whatever you like, so if you do the test at 17 you can ride anything by 19, for instance.

Here's my bike - it's six years old now (i've had it for three) and it lacks top end compared to Gixxers, ZX-10Rs et all but it's still a missile :)
Very nice. 8O Bet it sounds sweet with that Akra can too.
(Can't see the top end being that much of a problem, either )
I did regularly. Had an RC45 until 2003 - sold it as I just didn't use it as much as I would have wanted to, and the thought of not being able to repair/replace any bits if I was to toss it down the road had me riding it a fair bit less than I wanted to.
I did put 6000 miles on it in 3 years though.
I also have a 1990 TZR250SP Reverse Cylinder in the garage - just need to get round to replating the barrels and eplacing the holes piston.
Went out on a 250 twin one day, and came back on a limping 125 single ;)
Nice, they really are special bits of kit. I know a guy who has an RVF which isn't really the same league but it's still got the styling going for it. Love that single sided swingarm.
Envious of the TZR too - having had an RS125 I'd love to have a nice sports 2 stroke with a decent amount of power to play with. Get it fixed for the summer I say, you'd be mad not to. ;)
Here is a video I put together just before I sold the RC45...

Enjoy.

Lovely little vid, fantastic sound. :D Is that on some kind of private road? You'd only get tarmac that empty in the UK if it had barriers at both ends.
Thanks - I made that so that I could always get an "RC45 fix" as knew as soon as I sold the bike I would regret it... ;)
To help get over the pain I spent to time/money/effort on my Corvette Z06 to take it to 420rwhp (480ish bhp) but even though it's now a 0-60 in 3.8s, 11.5s @120mph+ 1/4 mile capable car, it is still not a sports bike - and I do miss the rush of the "instant acceleration" that cagers never really get to feel (well, Macca F1 and Veyron guys might :P)
An that drive was just another weekend jaunt in the east Texas country side... ;)

Wow, that's a seriously quick car. As you say, not a bike, but I'd imagine that eases the pain somewhat. ;)
As far as the roads well... that's just plain not fair. :P I assume they're fairly strict on speeding in Texas? From what I've heard the states has a lot of low speed limits and pretty low tolerance about people, erm, shall we say 'making progress' too. If it wasn't for that I might have to be on the next flight.
(Not that I'm saying you necessarily need to be doing a million miles an hour to have fun, but let's face it a bike like that's being mistreated if you do less than 60mph everywhere ;))
Well - they are strict on speeding here, but no "points on the license" system in place yet, just traffic fines (that are reflected on your insurance rates as sooon as the insurance companies get the news ;))
The point is to pick and choose where and when you go fast (with the bike I would always take my speed out into the coutry side) and with the car use a radar detector to at least know where troopers are working their radar.
I also take the car out into the country on a regular basis (even have a couple videos I could post) - but as far as "fast cars" go, my car is about 100hp down on most of the other guys I drive with.
420rwhp Vettes are a literally a dime a dozen out here - many of them are in the 450 to 480rwhp range. Not to mention what the tweaked and modded Vipers and Porsche GT2's etc are running. So I normally stick to the rear of the pack ;) hehe

Well call me simple, but if a car's got over 400bhp at the wheels I'd tend to think of it as pretty nippy. :P Sounds good fun though - round here just being out in the country is no guarantee that there won't be a camera pointed at you as you come around a corner. That's not to say there aren't bits of the UK that are a lot quieter but on the whole you have to be fairly careful, especially if it's a weekend and you're on a road that's popular with bikers.
Still plenty of fun to be had tho. ;)
MotoDude 10-04-2006, 05:20 PM Have not ridden in some time (starting your own business will do that to you), but I love motorcycles and plan to climb back on as soon as time allows. Here (http://www.geocross.org/video.html) are some old helmetcam videos I put together back in 2000/2001. Sorry about the broken links...
Yup, I’m a dirt bike guy.
Nice vids! Places like those where you can just ride all day off road with scenary like that have to be one of the biggest things parts of the US have going for it imo. They recently made basically all off-road riding illegal in the UK unless you're on private land with permission, it's an absolute joke. :(
I'd still love to get my hands on an XR250 or something like that one day. I had a go on a mate's KTM 525 a while back (interesting bike for your first off road experience btw!) and it was fantastic fun. What were you riding in those vids?
MotoDude 11-04-2006, 04:18 PM That’s a 2000 WR400F. Attached is a pic of it when it was all shinny & new.
Yeah, the States does have some good things going on, but that’s all changing fast. There have been many closings of areas to off-road fun.
Just received an email this morning from my riding buddies back in Southern California. They went riding last weekend after it had been raining for days. This is what they sent me:
An Epic Riding Adventure (http://hunterb.com/epic)
This is from the same location that is in the video titled arrowhead woods. The XR400 in the stream is the same one that is in front of me in the video titled Ridgecrest. Poor bike.
 Poor bike indeed! Very impressed that it ran at all after that. Part of the reason I like the sound of a Honda dirt bike is precisely because out of all the bikes available a Honda would probably best cope with the crappy job I'd do of taking care of it.
That's one very tidy looking WR400! :)
Wizrad 26-04-2006, 05:15 PM These probably aren't the appropriate boards for me, but hell i am havin fun with Tourist Trophy. When i was a teen was riding Yamahas and the like (dirt bikes) but now i ride either my 02' Vrod, my 72' Sportster or my 49' Panhead
Pfft, horses for courses and all that, but a bike's a bike at the end of the day. :)
(And although not really to my current tastes, that's quite a garage!)
Wizrad 27-04-2006, 02:20 PM Agree with ya there, A bike is a bike. Think alot has to do with who influenced ya as a Teen/Kid. For example, I could have very easily leaned towards the Metric bikes if not for who I was hanging out with at the time. Had a friend when I was 12 whos dad had a brand new 76' FLH Shovelhead Custom. First time I heard it start and sittin there idling with its good ol "Potato, Potato, Potato" sound was all it took for me lol :)
Hehe very true. I think one of the things that subconsciously turned me onto bikes was that when I was a little kid we often went across the pond to France for a week or two in the summer and every time we'd be waiting in a hot car balancing suitcases on our heads and all the bikes would be filtering past to be the first on the boat.
Currently I'm a bit of an adrenalin junkie though, so bike-wise it has to be something I can go too quickly on, on or off road. (However the fact I don't actually have a car license or car, slightly restricts just how impractical I can get )
Wizrad 27-04-2006, 06:00 PM :) I hear ya there. Speed is good lol. Would love to get ya on my VROD and see what ya thought.
Have to say, the V-rod is the only Harley that has any appeal at all to me atm. Would very much like to have a go on one.
Wizrad 28-04-2006, 02:10 PM I think you'd enjoy it :) Harley's shot at the metric market. Although i haven't ridden many metrics, it doesn't do to bad compared to them. Went down and test rode one, within a week it was in my garage lol. Wish now i had waited, cause ya can get it in black now :?
I love the 'metric' market term. Not a phrase that's used over here.
Although I'm a big believer in black being the new black, I think Harley's are all about shinyness and a v-rod probably does need to be silver. ;)
Wizrad 28-04-2006, 02:30 PM well, the "Metric" term i use is basically so as not to offend anybody as opposed to saying "Rice-Burner" (no offense everyone) lol
As far as the Silver, i like it alot, but the black with the silver frame looks VERY good :)
Hehe, no point taking offense to that. Rice burner's another term which seems to be reserved for US bikers I think, I haven't heard it once over here.
I suppose considering we've got more of a sportsbike culture than anything else over here it's not too surprising though. Frankly with the crappy weather 10 of the 12 months of the year and countless car drivers out to kill us, I reckon bikers over here are better off sticking together.
Wizrad 28-04-2006, 03:02 PM and countless car drivers out to kill us, I reckon bikers over here are better off sticking together.
Same here, although I am not in the U.S. anymore (Canada now), seems some of the drivers here visualize you with a big red bullseye on your back lol The biggest being they love to ride on your rear fender. If i'm in my truck they still do it, so i give them a little "Brake Check Wake Up Call", but not gonna do that on my bike :D
The favourite around here is being pulled out on. Lots of windy roads with junctions every 200 yards makes for, erm, interesting riding! Sometimes it's hard to believe people don't see you, but somehow you seem to be invisible until you're just a couple of inches away. Ah well, it's all good fun.
callaghan 16-05-2006, 05:34 PM i ride a 1988 cbr 600-f1. currently, it leaks a little coolant i think, from the base gasket, but only when i am raping the hell out of it!! under normal riding, even in the mountains, it does just fine.
i ride with full gear, head to toe, and thankfully, havent had a nasty crash. i did break my hand in three place about 6-7 years ago.
btw, my first bike was a suzuki katana (kanatuna) 600, a 93 model. got when i was 18. damn, i need a new bike bad...

MustMoto 15-06-2006, 11:08 PM I ride alot. just about every day. Today i road a ZX14 to work and ZX10 turned into a streetfighter at lunch. The line up for me always changes....
callaghan 16-06-2006, 02:58 AM dude, can i pry you for a little info, if you know? why is there such a "hit", or i should say, a noticeable power increase right around 5 grand on the zx 14? is there a little computer work going on there, like maybe a timing game?
im jealous, i wish i could ride a 14 to work, and a 10 on my lunch break, but i have to settle for a zx6 after a service, and a vulcan 900, and prarie 700...
MustMoto 16-06-2006, 02:51 PM It's a few factors - timing, fuel, and air restriction. It was done to mellow out the bottom end hit of the beast. Kinda to smooth things our and make it more ridable around town. There are quite a few guys slowly figuring it out and working on PC maps. Check this site out, there is a lot of discussion about this subject ====> http://www.bikeland.org/board/forumdisplay.php?FID=27
