TT just got me thinking about all the bike games of the past. No doubt my all time favorites are EA Sports SBK series (still play them alot) and Microprose's GP500. I kept playing those games even when I got out of gaming. anyway here is my brief recollation of games of the past. I know I'm missing a few
1. Hang On: Fun game from Sega back in the old days. Strickly arcade but still fun at the time. Genisis version was a blast
2. Hang On GP95: Another Sega title this one on the Saturn. Again very arcadish but even with it’s twitchy control it was fun to play. for some reason I loved the cheesy techno sdtk
3. Sega Manx TT: for sure the arcade version was the best because of the bike. Loads of fun to talk crap with friends at Dave & Busters (or any arcade for that matter) in those cold winter months. Saturn and PC versions lost the feel of the arcade
4. Moto Racer: I liked the first one more than the second one. Use to sneak this in work when I was bored. It was funny because one day my boss caught me and his comment was “glad I’m not the only one!” had to let him win though cause he threaten to fire me if I beat him.
5. Road Rash: never really into this game because I didn’t think the riding was the actual focus
6. SBK series (EA Sprots): IMHO the best bike games around still. I liked all 3. I thought the first one was kind of the best handling wise. 2000 was a bit buggy and lost a touch on feel. Hated that they put the Bostroms in the US release and made them so much faster than everyone else! 2001 was a decent balance of both. They were making a follow up and then EA took it in house and then just killed the series. Pity
7. GP500 (Microprose): Great game though a little hard to many. Gameplay was great but I thought the bikes flipped over on their sides to fast, but then again maybe GP bikes handle like that….I wouldn’t know!!!!! I was hoping these guys (Melbourne house) would bring it to a console or make a follow up. They did a great job with Grand Prix Challenge for the PS2 and Test Drive LeMans for Dreamcast. They were rumored to be making another bike game but nothing came of it. GPC and TDLM show what can be done on PS2. People say GT4 or TT couldn't handle more bikes or cars on screen. For sure the graphics have to be scaled back, but those two have great graphics while runningover 20 + cars on the screen. great physics and the AI is pretty good also. The dreamcast version of TDLM was simply incredible for it's detail and sheer speed. I really hope Melbourne house gets another shot at a bike game
8. RedLine Racer : Ok I guess. Put graphics over gameplay, but for a arcade type game it wasn't bad. I just found it boring. TIt was more about the game engine than the game IMHO and how it could “scale up” the graphics depending on the PC. This game later came to Dreamcast as Suzuki Alstare
9. AMA Superbike : I looked forward to this one for a while but it turned out to be so so bad. Don’t think I’d ever seen a more bugged out game in my life. The gameplay wasn't that great either.
10. Moto GP (Namco): Love it at the arcade even today. The PS2 versions are ok and are fun when you play with someone. But even though I still get each new version (if #4 would ever come out in the US!!!) it really doesn’t hold my attention unlease I’m playing with someone or at the arcade
11. Moto GP (THQ): Guess I’m the only one who really thinks this one just sucks. Don’t know, just don’t like the feel of it. I got an xbox for it and after a month sold both
12. RS Riding Spirits: You could call this the pre-tourist trophy. The control was pretty bad but the came had lots of promise. Heard there was a second one but I could never find it.
13: Castol Honda Superbike: Now this was a sim!!! not the most fun (especially since you could only ride the RC45) but it had the physics down. If I could have ridden the other bikes I would have liked it more. You really had to be hard core to enjoy it though
