View Full Version : The Next Tourist Trophy
Slow1 09-05-2006, 02:00 PM I think this is going to be the best that it gets......... Looks like they are going to integrate bikes into the next version of GT on PS3. The good is that we won't get shafted on the options like we did with this version. So hopefully we would be able to track career stats.
But my fear is that since it's going to be part of GT they aren't going to change the car-ish physics of the game for the bikes that are driving me crazy. They'll just make it prettier (and dumber) Also while I'm against cheat codes and such it would suck if you are required to go through all the car tests/races to get the bikes. This is an area I think GT really sucks. If they are going to have all these different types of racings to be a jack of all trades game, then they should be independant of each other.
Wizrad 09-05-2006, 02:12 PM Don't know if any of you caught the Sony Press Conference yesterday, but looks like they will be combining GranTurismo and Tourist Trophy into one game.
About half-way down the page.

I second that. While I have and do play both TT and GT3/4, integrating those together into one game seems a tad foolish. What real benefit does bringing the two together have? From a pure marketing standpoint, fans such as myself would buy both games, and fans of one or the other wouldn't be forced into buying a game they would only play to a certain point. I leave the games like that on the shelf, and I'm pretty sure many others are the same way.
The only way this would work is a bonus/discount pack, if that. Include a limited demo of the other game Perhaps that would cause a curiosity that helps bring people to the genre they're not yet playing.
 Two for the price of one? Or an excellent car racing sim with bikes bolted on as an afterthought? Or just a generic PS3 demo that doesn't mean anything? Mmmm speculation.
Very interesting though, thanks for posting it. Tbh I don't really follow games that much these days, but will definitely be interested to see how the PS3 does work out. Not that I'll be able/willing to pay $600 for it anyway.
Just read that site a bit more. I can't believe Sony have come up with a 'new' controller for the PS3 which looks exactly the same but as the PS2 one and it won't have the force feedback feature. Impressive. :?
Wizrad 09-05-2006, 03:01 PM Well my understanding was that Bikes were to be added all along, but the PS2 couldn't handle it, so hence Tourist Trophy. The GT HD (what they named their presentation) they showed yesterday was actually a hyped up version of GT4 running on the PS3. They wanted to show how PS2 games looked on the PS3 and it did look sweet!!!! They showed alot of games running in real time on the PS3 that juat had me in awe, but one really caught my attention. The new F1. With this game it will interact with your PSP and the PSP will be your side-view mirrors. Thought that was pretty slick :)
Interesting stuff. Is there a copy of the presentation on the net at all do you know, or just those pics?
Wizrad 09-05-2006, 03:12 PM You can catch it here. its the Sony Press Conference, you can watch it online or download it (about 133 mb)
http://www.gamespot.com
come to think of it, i need to watch it again lol they got slammed with traffic yesterday and i missed the first part and came in the middle of GT HD :)
Slow1 09-05-2006, 03:40 PM if they do indeed merge TT into GT then the only reason I could think of is to save $, with the logic being since they are pretty much the same game anyway, why bother working on them differently. But the obivous flaw in that is again what people like myself have been saying. TT needs a dedicated team and engine because it plays to much like a car game.
Still I don't get it because like you said I would buy both series as they don't compete against each other. I mean EA's NBA games don't really compete against the Madden games. I have my bike games and my F1 games and my Touring car games and Rally, etc..... and I truly like having them seperate forcused games. As long as they are good and keep making improvements I don't mind upgrading each year.
Anyway I hope you are right and that the bikes are included as a teaser for those who might not have thought about getting a bike game to have a chance to take a spin on one. Then again this whole thing could have just been a PR demo for E3
:@ Gamespot is such a pain with downloads. After much faffing around digging out my password etc I've managed to get it downloading to this server (albeit at a typically crappy limited speed of about 80k/s) after which I'll post the mirror link here so nobody else has to suffer it.
Edit: Just moved a few related posts in here, sorry for any confusion. :)
Wizrad 09-05-2006, 04:32 PM Sounds like a good idea. Gamespot was a real pain in the arse yesterday, but seems to be doin good for me today. I am re-watching it without downloading it and haven't had a burp yet (knocks on wood)
hmmm.......also looks as if someone has been busy moving posts lol
And now in handy, clickable, no registration required form: Sony's PS3 press conference (http://files.vaya.ws/169_sonypressconf_e32006_wm.zip).
(Yep Wizrad - not something I intend to make a habit of though, I promise ;))
Wizrad 09-05-2006, 04:48 PM LOL no prob Dom my man, i think Slow and i were on the same wave length and posted about the conference about the same time.
Slow1 09-05-2006, 05:20 PM Ok not to start a fight or anything but I really find it annoying when people keep saying “PS2 can’t handle this or can’t do that….” That is just marketing speak to convince people to update to what ever upgrade the companies have coming down the pike. The bottom line is that it is actually harder to make a stupid game than it is to make a smart one. Power isn’t the issue, marketing is the problem. PPD simply has chosen to focus on making very good looking , prize loaded games instead of the smarter more deep playing sims they claim the series to be. There is nothing wrong with this choice and given the number of GT games sold it would be hard to argue that they made a mistake. But a game the limitations of the AI in GT and TT as well as the physics issue with TT aren’t because of the PS2.
All you have to do is look at F1 Challenge by Melbourne House to see what the PS2 can do. You have over 20 cars on the screen and it never slows down. The AI is pretty good and challenging. Point blank that game has depth for those who want it and can be made simple for those who don’t want to take it that far. I would love to have a time trial contest with that game. Are the graphics a match for GT4? Well no, but then again they are very very good and the trade off really isn’t much to complain about. Melbourne House chose to focus on the actual gameplay as the priority instead of flah options, like a photo mode, a million cars no one will ever drive outside of passing a test, etc….. The thing I don’t get is why we can’t have both especially from companies like PPD who have the budget and clout to give us that.
Again there is nothing wrong with the route that PPD has gone with GT4 or other companies who have chosen flash over substance. The numbers don’t lie and apparently that’s what a lot of people want. Like Dom I don’t really play or follow games anymore, just keep an eye out for a decent racer. The simple fact for me is that TT aside, when I did get around to playing it has been older non-flashy games that I pick up and spend time with. You know the SBK series and Sega Rally2, games that have good actual depth and that I don’t have to spend 40hrs unlocking stuff just to get the things I want. I got out of gaming because I got tired of all the promises of next generation gaming and all that really meant was prettier graphics with the same bad AI and physics.
Slow1 09-05-2006, 05:22 PM no problem about the move. like wizard I guess I'd just stumbled across it also and thought it fit in the what I'd like to see thing....... no worries though. i hate hijacked threads also!!!! ^_^
 Two for the price of one? :
No, more like a full game with a Bonus Demo Disc was what I was thinking, sort of like
An excellent car racing sim with bikes bolted on as an afterthought? Or just a generic PS3 demo that doesn't mean anything? Mmmm speculation.:
Just not an afterthought. And It could work both ways; an excellent bike racing sim with a car sim demo disc skinned to it.
Either way, I don't like the idea of compromising two titles to justify a $100(U.S.) video game, as I'm certain that's what will happen. That is, if PS3 is going to cost an arm and a leg, why not make the games cost the other hand and foot?
es nes 09-05-2006, 08:19 PM id rather have the two games kept seperate. i can only see this as hurting the number of vehicles for both due to model time and licensing fees. plus, TT really should lose some of the gt4 car feeling (such as the brakes that have been pointed out here before).
the only thing i had to adjust to from gt4 to TT was the fact that apparently every bike understeers/holds its line on the throttle instead of being able to set up to oversteer/tighten the line.
Exactly, like I said before. I'd buy both. Maybe I'm foolish for saying this, but the big draw for me in buying TT was that it was from PD ("the creators of Gran Turismo"). Before I bought this, I wasn't really into racing bikes.
Just knowing the reputation and history of the GT series, as I've played them all, was all I needed. Not knowing much about motorcycle racing, I didn't look into other titles I've read about on these forums. Those same titles I'm looking into purchasing soon, to see what I have so foolishly missed!
