View Full Version : looking for a new bike.
callaghan 01-06-2006, 07:09 PM well, the title says it. i am looking at buying a new bike in the next few weeks, maybe about a month at the latest. i have had my eye on the truimph daytona 675 for a little while now. i was wondering if anyone has any experience on one of these. also, any recommendations are welcome. im am looking for something that can handle a track day or few, and it will be used mostly for commuting, and mountain riding on the weekends. im open to pretty much anything, but im trying to keep it under 10 grand USD.
As I said in the other topic, the 675 is meant to be a fantastic bike. That said, it seems very sporty and I don't know how good it'd be for commuting. You got a long way to go for work?
callaghan 12-06-2006, 09:43 PM no too long, i take some relatively twisty roads to work, but i also have the option of taking a 20 two lane straight highway. the trip is about 45 miles one way, and takes me about 45 minutes to about an hour, depending on traffic and lights.
es nes 13-06-2006, 12:35 AM what about a new gsxr750?
callaghan 13-06-2006, 03:25 AM i thought about it, although, im trying to keep it a "little" less race rep. ive heard nothing but good things about the 750 though.
dom, thanks for your input. i will be using this thing pretty much year round, with the exception of when it snows, (maybe 1 or 2 times a year.) im wondering if i will like riding a standard. my best friend has a cb 599 (hornet by you guys??) and im thinking of borrowing it for a weekend, just to see if it like it or not.
im hoping the 675 isnt as much a race rep as i think it is.
oh, dom, i will be adding a full "ap" brake system, and ill have the suspension sorted and quite possibly, maybe some light engine work. i have the luxury of doing most work myself at my shop, but the suspension i will probably just send off to a place called traxxion dynamics. they do awesome work and are about an hour or two from where i live.

I think the 675 may be a bit sportier than you were hoping. Have a look at this pic, you can see just how high the seat is and how low the bars are:

By all accounts it is a great bike though. If I were you I'd probably try and get a test ride and see for myself whether it is just as good as everyone says.
I'd imagine the CB599 is the hornet for us. They're meant to be excellent bikes, certainly if you're happy to go down the unfaired route. Really good all rounders.
I'd have thought you want to figure out how much power you're after really. There's such a difference between say an SV and a 675, even if CC-wise they're pretty close together.
callaghan 13-06-2006, 12:32 PM as far as power goes, im not too concerened about it. i figured my 88 cbr600F1 had about 65-70 at the rear wheel (the motor was getting a bit tired) and it was still plenty for the street. i figure the sv would be close to that. the 675 is supposed to have around 110 at the wheel, so, yeah, it would be a lot more. damn, im late for work, gotta go...
callaghan 14-06-2006, 06:54 PM damn, this deal i just cant pass up. at my work, we took in a 2005 r6, red. we were just going to do some engine work, cuz it was making a funny niose, nothing too serious, so we thought. well, it turns out we had to put 3 cranks in it, replace the clutch completely, basket and plates and all, and actually had "Bob" from yamaha (wont give out his real name for obvious reasons) help us figure out what the hell was wrong with this thing. so we get it fixed and after i rebuild the water pump, we find out that its been repo'd. the bike is now ours, for $2800. fresh engine, fresh water pump, needs steering head bearings still. i can probably pick this thing up for about 3300 after all taxes etc...i think i found my next bike...im so excited ill have to post pics of it later. :)
Ooh, nice. Look forward to seeing pics.
callaghan 21-06-2006, 07:44 PM here she is...mine in two days!! i cant wait. i need to order steering head bearings for it, and replace the back tyre, and itll be good to go!
callaghan 21-06-2006, 11:06 PM :D :D :D :D i got it today!! damn i am soooo happy to have a bike again. i think ill reintroduce my knee to the tarmac this weekend.
Now that's a shiny bike... practically brand new as well! Enjoy it!
You lucky bugger ... :P

thank you, i think i will enjoy it. just means less time to play tt though...
ahh, the perks of working at a shop...8O i put about 200 miles on it after we fixed it, to help the motor break in a little before we gave it back to the customer, but now ill be doing the rest of the break in.
callaghan 23-06-2006, 03:37 AM took it home today, all i can say is...wow...what a difference between this r6 and the cbr f1 i had. not only is everything more refined, but its like everything is upped not just one level, but two, and the motor, plenty of power, but only when you want it. actually, the cbr felt like it had more torque down low, below 6 grand. but after that, the r6 fucks off (please excuse the term).
i am a happy man again...
Good stuff. :) Time for a nice race can?
callaghan 23-06-2006, 12:14 PM Good stuff. :) Time for a nice race can?
well, i thought about soome high mount pipes, but i dont like the way most look on the r6. first i need to sort out some issues that this thing has, and the maybe i can get some nic parts. the first thing after the necessities is a set of rearsets. i have to get back to upside gear pattern!!:shifty:
What makes you want a racing gear change setup?
callaghan 23-06-2006, 11:11 PM thats just what i am used to, plus i am going to take it to the track, soon i hope. my cbr had up-side-down gear pattern, it sucks that i cant change it on the r6. yamaha should have thought about that when they designed it, as a lot of people will take it to the track. but that just my personal taste. ;)
Each to their own! :) I'm surprised you can't just switch the linkage around, a bit of a pain to have to have to fork out for rearsets.
callaghan 24-06-2006, 06:36 PM yeah, the linkage actually goes through the frame, in a very specific hole. changing the angle would make it hit the frame. go figure :(
callaghan 25-06-2006, 12:05 AM well, if anyone cares, i rode my new r6 around for a bit today with some guys from work. all i can say is, wow, what a fantastic piece of machinery. this thing is almost telepathic in its feedback, and the rear is wonderful. i put a dunlop qualifier 190/60 on the rear, cuz i got it as a take off form a buddy/coworker. (btw, thanks dude.) so its a bit wider and has a taller sidewall, but the bike didnt seem to mind the extra height in the rear. anywho. during the ride i almost lost the front once. but it was so non dramatic, just a little chatter, but you knew exactly where you stood. i didnt get my knee down, but i didnt know the roads and i never rode with these guys before, so i wasnt expecting to. im still breaking in the motor in and as a result i wasnt really revving it that high. i very happy with this bike. ok, off my soap box.
callaghan 30-06-2006, 12:25 AM dude, i feel like such a squid...the bike is crashed...and i only had it for 2 weeks...will post a little later the details. i am fine, no injuries what-so-ever. all i can say is, thank god i had a race suit with all my gear on!! with out it i would be dead, no bullshit!
 What happened?
Glad to hear you're in one piece, but very sorry to hear about the bike. :(
callaghan 30-06-2006, 11:12 PM ill get pics tomorrow, but the short story...i hit a rather large bump while travelling on I-75 (for those in other countries, it s major 4-8 lane highway, depending on where youre at) and coming off a bridge, the pavement changes. i was doing about 85, or so...90mph tops...and the bike decided it wanted to tank slap from lock to lock all the way off the road. i destroyed to lower triple clamp, but the forks seem to be okay. i picked to bike up today, but didnt really have time to look it over real good. broke the steering locks off (or rather they are smushed out cuz they are aluminum) destroyed the rear wheel, but the front looks ok.the subframe snapped in half, and the front fairing stay broke where the bolts are to hold the front fairing on. the engine is fine, and the exhaust was thrown about 30 feet from the bike. the part that tickles me (angry may be a better term, though im not angry cuz im still alive...) is that after i fell off, the bike stopped tank slapping, and drove off into a ditch, which caused the damage...go figure. anywho, like i said in the "introduce yourself" thread, i always wear my gear, even if i am commuting, like i was yesterday, cuz you never know when youre going to take a fall.
That sounds like a really nasty one, glad (and a bit surpised, sounds like you were lucky!) you escaped in one piece. It must have been quite a 'bump' to set the thing off like that. :?
Were you riding alone at the time or out for a ride with some mates?

He was alone, he was actually commuting back from work. You give him two wheels, and he'll figure out a way to write it off.
Just joking Callaghan.

or four...:shifty:
callaghan 04-07-2006, 02:05 PM ok, here is some pics of a crashed r6...and a few of us foolin' around
Matt W. 04-07-2006, 04:35 PM My 599 even made it in the pics. :D Fooling around, eh...??
I've been waiting to use this pic for years...LMAO.
p.s. This is at Barber Motorsports park couple of years back, when we were pit help for our friend Scott.
callaghan 04-07-2006, 10:58 PM lmfao...i had forgot all about that...
W, T, F. :P
The bike's looking a little less tidy than in previous pictures, I have to admit. What gets me is it still looks shiny clean - how do you crash a bike without getting it dirty?
Streetfighter time? ;)

i honestly dont know. there was plenty of grass, and pine straw and other assorted leaves and stuff all over the place, but what really got me was after i stopped sliding, i stood up, checked myself for broken bits, then looked for the bike. and i couldnt see it. i thought i might have hurt myself a little more than i origianally thought...found out it was in the ditch way off the road. it must have flipped, or at least went upside down once, cuz it broke the front stay, and the subframe, but didnt really touch the tank.
i might do the street fighter thing at first, but i really do want to get it back to looking like a new r6, just with a few aftermarket parts on it.

Everyone's got an R6. Get the fairings off, fix what needs fixing and whack some Renthals on. :D
callaghan 06-07-2006, 12:13 PM hmm, its an option, but i probably wont go down that road. the bike was really nice the way is was...i want to try to get it back to as closse to factory as i can.
es nes 08-07-2006, 03:04 AM callaghan - are you sure your not in texas? i saw a crash damaged r6 today with wide bars today ;)
callaghan 08-07-2006, 03:10 AM haha, nah, i wish i was riding it already. itll probably be about two months to three til its up and running on the street again.
callaghan 10-08-2006, 02:46 AM some pics of my leathers and gear. my helmet didnt get one scratch on it! lucky me. i guess its better than banging it up too...

You might want to talk to Keith Code about that one ;)
Looks like your boots saved you a broken ankle at the very least. Any progress on the bike?
callaghan 21-08-2006, 06:43 PM yeah, all i need is a pair of forks and it will be done. i'll get some pics up maybe on tuesday. there are a few things i decided didnt really need fixing, like a cracked side fairing. at first i didnt think the forks were bent, but after getting everything else together, the bike didnt want to go straight. i may just have to rebuild them, but its cheaper to find a set online like on ebay than it is even for me to rebuild them, where i get a great discount, and the labor is free...
callaghan 07-09-2006, 06:59 PM well, i took the bike for a quick spin today, and have mixed feelings. i think something is still off towards the front of the bike. everything feels good, just that is seems to lean to the left a little, from what i remember. it goes straight, and with the one extra tooth rear sprocket, and leo vince SBK pipe, this thing moves now...like violent wheelies in first on the throttle. ill get pics up tomorrow, if anyone is interested.
isaac8317 07-09-2006, 08:00 PM I recommend this bike...well if your rich, LOL.
Matt W. 09-09-2006, 12:28 AM So how was the ride home, skinny?
callaghan 09-09-2006, 02:16 AM it was great. a bit loud, i forgot earplugs...anywho. i was really trying to feel the front, you know, just paying attention to everything, and you can really feel like every bump, every imperfection on the asphalt, its amazing. the cbr felt camparitively numb. i think i may have my rear wheel out of alingment. the back end is loose on right handers, and tight on lefts. the front is fine. the engine feels a lot stronger, but it should. the pipe and 49 tooth cog really woke it up man. the steering damper came in handy too. it makes the bike feel heavy or light, just by how hard you set it. if your hauling ass, you can set it harder, and it makes the front feel super stable. or set it lighter, where it will still wiggle a little, but like the cbr, its slow and controllable.
i need to get the rest of the rivit clips for the lower fairing, it rattles over 10 mph...sucks. i thought i was going to lose them at first.lol. i want to take it to the mountains, maybe in about 2 weeks from monday? wanna go?
ill get some pics and post up tomorrow.
