Five-times Moto GP world champion Mick Doohan has been fined AUS$2500 by an Australian court after admitting to head-butting a bouncer in a Darwin nightclub at the weekend.
The 41-year-old Australian pleaded guilty in Darwin magistrates court to an assault charge after becoming involved in a fight at the Honeypot strip club in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The court heard that Doohan, who took five straight world titles from 1994-1998, began to strip at 2.50 am and was asked to leave the premises by one of the club's bouncers.
Doohan replied: “If you ever want to work in this City again, I suggest you leave me alone.”
He then head-butted the bouncer in the mouth while being restrained, before a colleague removed the 54-time race winner from the building and handed him over to the police.
After spending 14 hours in a cell, Doohan said that he could not remember anything about the incident.
His lawyer asked the magistrate not to convict the Monaco-based star due to his sporting achievements and charity work.
But magistrate Greg Cavanagh said that Doohan's status as a role model for youngsters made his behaviour “wholly unacceptable,” and fined him.
