View Full Version : Super-Bikes, a mini-review

Hey guys, just finished my first 'real' race in Super-Bikes and I thought I'd let you know what I think so far.

First off, the controls aren't freely mappable. While it would have been nice, not all the configurations are crap so I can overlook this. There is also no "duck" button, which I find very nice although I know some people like the one in TT.

The AI isn't perfect, but it's a lot more fun than Polyphony's. I even saw one fellow toss it during the race (I wasn't anywhere near him! Honest! See pic...).

Feels pretty good on the handling, not quite as smooth as TT initially was but it seems like the physics could get pretty interesting with this one. The crashes are also much better than TT, with a fairly broad reaching scorecard even keeping track of your rider's injuries! The throttle and brake are also much easier to judge than in TT, feels like the distance pushing the stick is better represented within the game. Half power on the analog stick equals half power on the throttle, very nice.

The rider customization seems about the same as TT. I haven't unlocked anything yet but from what I do see it seems fair.

Only real complaint I have with it at this point, having made a few practice passes and about to start my second race, is you only start with a handful of crap Hondas. This may or may not bug you like it does me, but whatever. I'm working towards that Daytona 675 anyway, so I guess it'll only make winning it that much sweeter.

Sounds interesting. :) I picked up the PC version yesterday and will be trying it out this evening with any luck. (My PC's not quite what you'd call 'cutting edge')

I'd say something encouraging, but I don't even know what the required specs are. It runs ok on the PS2 so maybe it scales well enough for the PC. You'll be finding out sooner than I will though, since these are imports and my PC box hasn't come in yet.

I have finished the Honda series, going to work on the Ducatis next. I am really impressed with the physics so far, the bikes don't float.

Also, about the mostly non-configurable controls for the PS2 version, small price to pay for better style configuration. The brakes, shifting, and traction control are all individually controlled.

Not that I mind so much using no assistance in this one since my arch enemy - the duck BUTTON - fails to make an appearance.

if you go into options>realism settings and set rider stance to manual, up/down on the d-pad becomes lean forward/back

doing this also frees up the power wheelies that can catch you out if you dont lean forward to stop them in time

particularly hairy if the wheel picks up when you're heading into a turn

last i heard there was no release date state side ...

hm ... i prefer the TT way ...

how does it feel compair to Suzuki TT superbikes? i hated that game as there was no feel what so ever as what the bike was doing. the bikes themselves were weightless.

It was recently released in the UK and it does indeed have the 675.

Unfortunately, as you may see, I've not yet discovered where to unlock it. :(

Edit:
Sorry Es, I haven't played Suzuki TT. As a personal rule because of Suzuki Alstare on the Dreamcast, I attempt to avoid bike games named after any manufacturer. However, I can say I think the bikes feel more meaty than in TT.

I don't think I could say trade in one for the other, but any bike fan should definitely have both if possible.

Oh... how'd you get that screenshot? Capture card?

Well thats a shame that the states doesnt have it yet, I guess its the price we pay since we got TT before you guys.

Yes, through capture card.

I do hope it gets released in the US soon. Would be nice to see two good motorcycle franchises improve on one another, similar to the opportunity Gran Turismo and Forza have.

red frog - it was released state side as suzuki tt superbikes, everywhere else it was released as tt superbikes iirc.

what type of rider customization can you do? just out fits or can you adjust form as well?

Eh? The game I'm playing now is Suzuki TT?

Edit:

Nevermind, I misunderstood. It couldn't be the Suzuki game, this one isn't Isle of Man.

no, TT superbikes is based around isle manx, nw400, etc. this is superbike riding challenge which is more of a TT/gt4 style game, correct?

Red Frog

Yes, you are correct.

yes, me too.

i've also just had a strange episode re: unlocking...

finished a season, then the game said 'you've now unlocked these bikes for use in free race and time trial mode' then autosaved

they were indeed available in those modes, because i tried them out

went back to the next season, did a few races then decided to have another play about in free race

the last set of bikes i unlocked were gone

i'm hoping they reappear later...

Yes, through capture card.

I was wondering if you could encode me replay of TT, you live in the states right?

I'll pay you! ( , joking)

Red Frog

I might consider it. How long is the replay?
There may not be sound though, haven't really figured out how to get my encoder to grab it at the same time.

Yes, I live in the good ol U S of A.
It's a shame replays can't be converted between systems, especially considering the continental diversity of this site.

just bought superbikes tonight - for those who haven't got it.......

imagine you've got gt4 - and then you go out and buy toca2

you're someway towards seeing how dissapointed i am having owned TT and then buying Superbikes.

close, but no cigar i'm afraid - our friends in the us aren't missing anything.
